Periodontal disease causes harm in a way that is gradual or not easily noticed. It is an infection of the gums that starts out as plaque, the opaque film on the teeth that hardens to form calculus/tartar. Tartar accumulates often on the back of the lower teeth and in between back teeth below the gum line. Tartar harbors bacteria that release acid as a by product that attacks the bone and soft tissue .

The early stage of gum disease known as Gingivitis starts with tartar and red or puffy bleeding gums and can be treated with a routine dental cleaning. Left untreated, Gingivitis becomes Periodontitis which harms the tissue surrounding your teeth and the bone that holds your teeth in place. Bad breath and bleeding gums are a few early warning signs. Later in the disease process the loss of bone results in loose teeth and dental infections. The disease advances silently, often without pain until you notice that teeth may be getting loose. Routine Dental checkups and cleanings are the best way to prevent Periodontitis. Once you have been diagnosed with Periodontal disease routine dental care is even more important to keep the disease from progressing.

Scientific research has discovered possible linkage between gum disease and stroke, heart disease, diabetes – even an increased risk for pregnant women. When your gums become diseased it can affect your overall medical health.
