Crowns
Over time as teeth become victims of decay, root canals, cracks. fractures and discoloration it may be time to consider a crown. A crown restores a compromised tooth back to a highly functional and aesthetic state.
Most crowns that we make are porcelain/zirconia. These are solid tooth colored crowns and are more accepted by the gums (some people with metal allergies will notice old porcelain fused to metal crowns will result in gum recession). These are very durable and are highly resisitant to fracture yet give a natural look.
The process of a crown starts with an x-ray to determine that the tooth is free of infection and has enough structure left to support a crown. Next you will be given a local anesthetic so no discomfort is felt. All existing filling materials are removed as is decay and the tooth is bonded and filled with a light cured buildup material. The tooth is then reduced and shape to allow for proper fit of the crown. A tiny cord will be placed around your tooth for 5 minutes to allow for a clean dental impression which is the next step. After the impression which sets in under 3 minutes a custom temporary will be made for you to wear while the crown is being fabricated. This will be temporarily cemented and an appointment will be made for you in 1.5-2 weeks to cement the crown. The second appointment rarely needs anaesthetic and is a short 15-20 minute procedure.
